I'm going to make the Quilt panel you didn't want

out what I did last weekend. The Quilt has become more than just a statement. It is now a national graveyard, our Arlington Cemetery, where we can all see the magnitude of this crime against humanity. It needs to grow larger and larger each year to help all of us remember these men and women who are so easily forgotten in the continued struggle.
Rock Hudson has twelve panels, but we aren't likely to forget him. But we shouldn't forget you, Larry, and Linus, and Zak, and Jamie, along with countless others we never met when they were alive. We know them now from experiencing their panels.
Now, I want others to experince the life
that was yours. Bowling, travel, airplanes and all the things that made you wonderful. My stepson now has the 1992 Olympics poster you bought in Barcelona hanging in his bedroom. When I tell him the story of how you flew there on the Concorde, you become a real person to him, and your memory lives on a little longer.
So, my dear friend, I am going to disobey your last wishes and make that panel for you. Maybe my son will help, and I can tell him your story while we work. When others who don't know you or me see that panel, they too will know your story. Maybe they will say a prayer, as I did that day on the Mall as wandered through the never-ending panels, getting to know people I had never met.
Working with Dole is part of Log Cabin's vision

ing purpose is to ensure that the gay and lesbian community has ties with both parties regardless of the outcome of the election. It has been a bumpy road, but in the end have still achieved an historic first, the Republican presidential nominee publicly asked for, and received, a gay and lesbian organization's endorsement. The GOP ticket reached out to the gay and lesbian community, opening a real opportunity for dialogue and education never seen before. We decided to take them up on it.
To best illustrate the world we envision down the road, look at Massachusetts. Today, in the Senate race between Massachusetts governor William Weld (R) and Senator John Kerry (D), we have a real example of what Log Cabin wants to achieve. In this race, both parties are doing everything in their power to court the gay and lesbian vote, with both candidates campaigning heavily within the community.
In 1990, when Weld first ran for governor, liberal gay groups in Massachusetts screamed in protest, but Weld asked for Log Cabin's support and advice, and we took him up on it. Six years later, it is clear that Log Cabin has done its part in transforming state politics in Massachusetts.
Weld has been followed by Mayor: Rudolph Guiliani (R) of New York, Governor Christine Todd Whitman (R) of New Jersey, Mayor Richard Riordan (R) of Los Angeles and a host of other prominent new Republican leaders whom Log Cabin helped to elect. In every race, we encountered the same knee-jerk negativism represented in the static world view expressed by liberal gay organizations.
Our community needs a bold strategic vision, not only for this election but beyond it. Log Cabin is doing its part, and our willingness to work with the Dole-Kemp ticket is part of that vision. Hopefully, we can count on the community's support in this effort, and not have our long term interests at risk by the irresponsible attempts by some to gather unquestioning support for an incumbent President, whom we know from experience that we cannot trust so blindly.
While some community leaders and frequent authors of letters to the editor may wish to engage in negative campaigning, Log Cabin puts its faith in the gay and lesbian community itself, which is sophisticated enough to see the good in long term strategies that will benefit us all.
Rich Tafel is the director of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay and lesbian political group with 52 chapters in 30 states.
